Digital Media Recruitment for Fall Prevention Among Older Chinese-American Individuals: Observational, Cross-Sectional Study

Digital Media Recruitment for Fall Prevention Among Older Chinese-American Individuals

Background: Research in fall prevention programs has increased in recent years in response to the aging demographics of the United States. To date, limited research and outreach programs have focused on ethnic minorities due to increased cost, language barriers, and cultural differences. Digital media platforms may be a cost-effective avenue to initiate fall prevention programs for minority populations.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether Facebook advertisements are a practical recruitment method for health education to the Chinese-speaking population.

Harvard Study of Adult Development

A Promise (There is Always Hope with Mental Illnesses) Short Film

"A Promise" tells a story of Fanny, a mother who suffers from schizophrenia with exacerbation during pregnancy. She was then institutionalized. Eventually, her ex-husband was granted the custody of their child, Pearl.

It is Pearl's birthday today, and while they all love Fanny always, they are somewhat ambivalent to go see Fanny, who is in her recovery. Love has no shame, even though it takes time to accept. And we know that one day, Pearl will say, "Thank you mommy for all your love." There is always hope!

Exploring the Impact of a Culturally Tailored Short Film in Modifying Dementia Stigma Among Chinese Americans: A Pilot Study

Objective

Chinese Americans, one of the fastest growing ethnic groups among the US elderly population, perceive high levels of dementia stigma. The authors examined the extent of the stigma and explored the impact of media through a culturally tailored short film to modify dementia stigma.

Methods

Chinese American participants were asked to answer a dementia questionnaire. A short film was then used to address the impact of media on dementia stigma.  Please see short film here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPs81mqHsVw

Results

Among 90 randomly selected participants, 89 % (n = 80) found the short film to be a useful way to modify their misconceptions about dementia. In the comparison between the group who felt less influenced by the short film and the group who recognized the short film to be extremely helpful, the latter group had a higher baseline of stigma toward dementia, as well as a shorter duration of residence in the USA.

Conclusion

Chinese Americans still perceive severe dementia stigma. Nevertheless, a culturally tailored short film demonstrated promising impact in modifying stigma toward dementia.

Affordable care act knowledge and publicity in the older chinese-american population

Studies have shown that lack of health knowledge in Chinese-American immigrants can be attributed to language and cultural barriers and that providing culturally competent and language-specific information may mitigate these barriers.  Thus, there is a need for materials about the Affordable Care Act (PPACA), especially concerning the administration of (Covered CA) and eligibility for coverage under the law.  Although many Chinese Americans are aware that they are required to purchase health insurance, they are unaware of how to do so. Policies should be directed toward helping the elderly minority population register for health insurance and understand the provisions in a language-specific and culturally competent manner. It is hoped that, with the implementation of these policies, the benefits of the PPACA can be maximized for the Chinese-American community, and the health disparities of the population can be alleviated.  Fulltext can be found here.

Duration of residence and dementia literacy among Chinese Americans

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

To investigate whether duration of residence (DOR) impacts dementia literacy in Chinese Americans aged 40-64.

MATERIAL: A total of 151 Chinese Americans answered a self-administered, true/false survey assessing knowledge of dementia symptoms, treatment, cause and prognosis. Two groups were dichotomized and compared based on DOR in the USA.

DISCUSSION: DOR did not greatly impact the understanding of dementia between respondents with a < 20-year versus a ≥ 20-year DOR. Both groups exhibited deficiencies in recognizing the symptoms of dementia.

CONCLUSION: Gaps in dementia knowledge reflect a stigma surrounding mental illness among Chinese Americans, and impact the seeking of professional care.

Improper Eye Care During Inpatient Psychiatric Stay

Literature has shown that unrecognized physical illnesses may exacerbate psychiatric symptoms leading to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization (1). In the U.S. there are approximately 257 per 100,000 population admissions to psychiatric hospitals, and 480 per 100,000 population admissions to psychiatric beds in a general hospital in 2011 (2).  While medical clearance is often done in the emergency room before admittance, it is highly likely that investigation about the use of vision correction is often not asked in the emergency room or on inpatient unit.  Fulltext can be found here.
